The Modern Menorcan
A woman's educational journey to earn a doctoral degree by gracefully aligning her past, present, and future with spirit and style.
"When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety; if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain. From this I understand that what I want also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me. There is a great secret here for anyone who can grasp it." -Rumi
What is a Modern Menorcan?
Traditionally, Menorcans were a displaced group of Spanish, Italian, and Mediterranean immigrants who came from the island of Menorca in 1767 to work as indentured servants in the early city of Smyrna and St. Augustine, Florida.Â
The families left their homes and culture to begin an indigo plantation that failed to provide for their community and left the newcomers desperate for hope and a future. Though many were lost to the harsh conditions, many families survived and continued to thrive in the area by spreading a rich combination of languages and cultures.Â
A Modern Menorcan is someone who aligns their past, present, and future by overcoming obstacles while maintaining a spirit of grace, style, and hope that will outlast adversity.
